Upgrading to LED: How to Retrofit Modern Lighting into Your Existing Northern Virginia Pool

Many older pools in our area were built in the 80s and 90s using 120-volt incandescent bulbs. These lights are notorious for burning out, using massive amounts of energy, and—most importantly—carrying high voltage into your pool water. Upgrading to LED isn’t just a style choice; it’s a significant safety and efficiency electrical upgrade.

The Switch from 120V to 12V

The biggest change in modern pool lighting is the move from high-voltage (120V) to low-voltage (12V) systems.

  • Safety First: 12V lights are significantly safer. Even in the rare event of a leak, the lower voltage is much less likely to cause a serious electrical hazard.
  • Energy Savings: An old 500-watt incandescent bulb can be replaced with a 30-watt LED that provides the same—or better—brightness.
  • Vibrant Colors: LED retrofits allow you to change your pool’s color via your smartphone or a remote, syncing perfectly with your exterior lighting.

The Retrofit Process

You don’t usually need to tear up your pool deck to upgrade. We can often “pull” a new low-voltage cord through the existing conduit. However, because you are switching voltages, we must install a dedicated pool light transformer.

  • Transformer Installation: The transformer takes the 120V power from your panel and steps it down to a safe 12V.
  • Sealing the Niche: We ensure the new pool & spa lights are properly seated in the existing niche with a new gasket to prevent leaks.
  • GFCI Protection: Modern codes require that these circuits are protected by a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI). During a retrofit, we verify that your pool wiring has a functioning GFCI breaker to provide an extra layer of protection against electrical faults.

Why Professional Expertise is Essential

Retrofitting lights in an older pool requires a professional eye to ensure the system is grounded and bonded correctly to meet current Virginia safety standards. Because older niche installations may have corroded bonding lugs or degraded conduits, a “simple” bulb swap can quickly reveal underlying safety issues that only a licensed electrician can address.
